| Jewelry designer Scott Colee is something of an architect – fashioning art deco and estate-inspired adornments for the woman whose style is classic-meets-contemporary and isn’t impressed by trend. Experimenting with satin finishes, sleek, streamlined forms and subtly hued precious and semi-precious stones, Colee expresses a sense of historical appreciation in his creations while simultaneously achieving a fresh, feminine, modern edge.
Colee skillfully manages to translate the sexy, strong architectural philosophy of Philippe Starck and the hauntingly charming style of The Great Gatsby into his debut collection, Chandelier. “I am intrigued that a concept originating in the early twentieth century has elements that would still be considered modern today,” says Colee. “The combination of linear and architectural shapes with graceful and flowing curves creates endless possibilities.”
The aptly named chandelier-inspired collection encompasses the graces of high society without being overly pretentious—swinging semi-precious pendants hang from earrings and necklaces. Large crystals decorated with precious and semi-precious stones are interchangeable and can be hung from an array of intricately linked necklaces with toggle closures. Rings are set with strong shapes and stones, and can also be stacked. All 18k yellow and white gold pieces are given satin finishes for a vintage feel.
A Los Angeles native, Colee grew up with a strong appreciation for art and design. His mother, an interior decorator, and father, an hotelier, made Scott’s childhood a well-rounded one in which the aesthetics of all eras of design was typical family conversation. Colee attended Skidmore College, where he graduated with a business degree and a minor in jewelry. He then moved to New York City and became a protégé of the elite Keiselstien-Cord jewelry design house. “All the things that have shaped my life kept coming out in my designs…it was just a natural move for me to be able to express the things that I am passionate about in my own way.” When celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Drea De Matteo, Reese Witherspoon, Lisa Marie and Marla Sokoloff began commissioning Colee’s pieces, he knew it was time to create a collection under his own personal design philosophy. |
