| Alex Sepkus was born in Lithuania, in 1954. He came to the United States in 1988 and, two years later after opening a workshop, created a collection of 18-karat gold and platinum jewelry. Alex graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Arts, where he received an education in fine arts and design. While still studying, he began to paint and make etchings, woodcuts and engravings. Alex's work became smaller and smaller, and eventually he ended up in jewelry. An early attraction to history and literature expressed itself in a series of intricate pins, made from a variety of materials and depicting not only fantasies, but also scenes from real life. Alex had clear views on politics and was able to receive political asylum in the United States. Because gold was banned in the Soviet Empire, upon arriving in the United States, Alex was able to acquire a better knowledge of traditional gold jewelry techniques and design working. While impressed by superb American craftsmanship, Alex was disappointed by many of the mainstream jewelry designs that were often repetitious and could be describe in simple literary terms. He saw an opportunity to fulfill his dream of becoming a jeweler who expressed feelings and beliefs through the craft. Alex thinks about his jewels as a link between the human body and its clothing--pleasant to touch and extremely comfortable to wear. Rooted in ancient jewelry traditions, they are pieces of modern art that can be worn with ease. The Squash Blossom is proud to represent the exquisite designs of Alex Sepkus. |
